From Rowland to Pennucci

A Family Story

The year was about 1905, the place was the United States of America, New York; the boy was Carmine Pennucci, 12. Carmine immigrated to the United States from Pescolamazza in Naples, Italy with his father, mother, and the rest of his family in search of a better life.

As a young man Carmine Pennucci worked as a Trolley Driver for the Transit Authority in Brooklyn, NY and in 1913 at an age of 21, married Rosa Marino, 18, who had also immigrated to the US from Naples, Italy with her family around 1905. Carmine was the first member of the Pennucci family to accept the message of Jesus Christ and the first in the family line to become a minister.

Carmine and Rosa (Rose) Pennucci had 6 children; Carmela (Lulu), Grace, Adeline, Michael, Mary and Becky. Their only son Michael had two children, a daughter, Flora and a son Michael Jr., who died from cancer in 1970 at an early age of 18. At the death of Carmine’s grandson Michael the Pennucci family named died as well.

In 1943, Grace Pennucci, Carmine’s second oldest daughter, married John Frances Rowland and they had two children named Daniel and Adeline. In 1952 at the young age of 33, John Frances Rowland died due to a faulty heart valve, leaving behind his wife of 9 years, his 8 year old son, Daniel, and his 6 year old daughter, Adeline.

Customary to those times, widow Grace (Pennucci) Rowland (who never remarried) raised her two children in Brooklyn, NY surrounded by her family; mother, Rose, and her siblings; Carmela, Michael, Mary, Becky and their families. (Carmine died the previous year in 1951 and was preceded in death by his daughter, Adeline.)

In 1966, Grace’s son Daniel Rowland married Nancy Kingsbury and they also had two children; Kenneth and John Rowland.

As a gift to his father Daniel, his grandmother Grace, his great-grandfather Carmine, and the surviving members of the Pennucci family; Carmela (Lulu) Pennucci and Mary (Pennucci) Fanara; John Rowland and his family; wife, Michele and children Aravis and Giovanni proudly announce that we have legally changed our family name from Rowland to Pennucci.

With Sincerest Love, Gratitude and Appreciation,

John, Michele, Aravis and Giovanni Pennucci

What a small world!! My name is Angela DiBiase- I am married to Ben DiBiase who is the younger brother of John (deceased) who was married to Becky Pennucci until her death. My sister in law, Rosie, and I have been trying to find Mary Fanara so that we could get some info about Becky for the DiBiase family tree. This tree has been painstakingly put together by Patrizia DiBiase of Canada ( a cousin to my husband) Anyway, I typed in Carmela Pennucci yesterday on Google and to my amazement came your lovely photo of the Pennucci family!!! I called Rosie and she went online. We tracked down Mary and she is going to call her to get more info on Becky (where she was born, exact date of death, etc.) She died when her sons Carmine and John Jr were just babies in the early 60's. John Sr remarried and he passed away from cancer in 1989. Becky's youngest son, John, died of leukemia in 1999 at age 35. I'd love to catch up and share stories. I love the whole family tree thing!! We live in Florida- I see you are in Minnesota. My sister lives in Stillwater, MN. I have 3 grown children, Catherine, Ben Jr and John- 1 grandson, Gian Anthony.
Thanks SO very much for sharing that lovely story and info!!!
